Working the system. Youth is wasted on the young.  You may have heard that expression.  If you are a young person, you might think that is what old people say.  If you are an old person, maybe you say that with a sense of regret - thinking of missed opportunities or mistakes from your past.  Today, I want to talk about this concept, and if there is any knowledge that needs to be transferred to the young folks among us, let’s talk about that.

You may have heard the expression “An idle mind is the Devil’s workshop”.  Okay if an idle mind is the Devil’s workshop, what exactly are you supposed to occupy your mind with?  Busywork?  What are we supposed to fill our heads with?  Is the answer the same for everybody, or does it depend?  That is the subject of today’s podcast.

100 more.  If you have listened to the podcast for a while, I understand that I might have come off as rather dismissive or uncaring about people who aren’t at what I call  Level 3: meaning family wife, partner, children, and your closest friends.  But that isn’t the case.  Today I want to share how I think about my relationships with people who are not all that close to me: neighbors, my community, and the public at large.

After watching The Tinder Swindler documentary on Netflix and seeing how the ladies victimized got called gold diggers by some when their story broke, I got thinking about real gold diggers and how you  - yes you - might have to deal with such a situation in your own life.  If you haven’t seen that documentary, you can Google “Tinder Swindler” and read the articles that pop up to get the gist of what happened.  Why do I say gold digging might be something you have to deal with in your own life?  Once people will see how well you're doing, you might have ladies interested in you just for the money, and for the security and lifestyle that you offer.  Today I want to talk about how to manage, or better yet, avoid, such situations.

I am working with a young man right now who is stuck.  He is stuck in more than one way.  He is fresh out of college, and like many, struggling to find work.  He is putting off moving forward with his girlfriend of 5 years due to his self-perception of a lack of progress toward things like having a substantial and stable income and owning a home.  I think what I am advising him to do might help a lot more people out there, so that is what we will work on in this week’s episode.

I very intentionally don’t normally discuss topical or news items in this podcast, but in rare cases when I feel I have insights from a particular event that might be useful for you, I’ll speak up.  Today is one of those days.  As of when I am recording this, February 5th, 2022, popular podcaster and celebrity Joe Rogan got into a great deal of trouble, rightfully, over comments that he made in the past.  I have a few thoughts I want to share about this, not to pile on Joe Rogan, but to learn from his mistakes.

We are two years in to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s time for another morale boost.   In my own life, I continue to see people cracking under this continued stress and pressure.  Cracking under pressure, that isn’t us.   Yielding or compromising on our standards and principles, that isn’t us.  We find a way to thrive in all conditions.  But, again, it doesn’t hurt for us to huddle up from time to time to remind ourselves of that.

It’s time for another morale boost.   I wish it wasn’t the case, but it is needed.  I am, like I am sure all of you are, disappointed that the COVID-19 pandemic is still dragging on and affecting so many people and the economy.   In my own life, I am seeing too many people cracking under this continued stress and pressure.  That isn’t what we do, is it?
